At momonde, we only choose papers that meet the highest standards of safety, aesthetics, and responsibility. FSC™, Non-Phthalate, REACH compliant – three enigmatic markings that, for us, are the absolute minimum. What do they actually mean? And why is it important to know them before you decide to buy?
FSC™ – fewer trees, more sense
FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council) certification means that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests. Forests where trees aren't cut down recklessly, but are planned and regenerated. Where every tree felled has a purpose, and every new planting a purpose. Where biodiversity is protected, the rights of local communities are respected, and future generations are cared for. For us, this isn't just a matter of ecology. It's a declaration that even the most beautiful product shouldn't come at the expense of the planet. FSC™ also stands for transparency—from the source of the raw material to the finished product. It's the feeling that by purchasing a planner or notebook, you're contributing to a better world.
Non-Phthalate – because skin contact matters
Phthalates are plasticizers often used in paints, adhesives, and plastics. They have a bad reputation because they can disrupt hormonal balance, especially in children and pregnant women. Their presence isn't always visible to the naked eye, but the effects can be noticeable. Non-Phthalate means that the inks and materials used to create our covers, prints, and details are free of these substances. You can safely touch, browse, leave your planner on your bedside table, or even cuddle up to your notebook (we know it happens!). At momonde, we pay attention to every detail—even the ink composition on the spine.
REACH compliant – the EU cares about the composition (and we appreciate that)
REACH is a European Parliament regulation on chemical safety. "Compliant" means that the substances used (e.g., adhesives, dyes, coatings) have been tested, reported, and pose no threat to health or the environment. This isn't just a blank slate. It's a guarantee that every element of the product—from the inside cover to the protective layer on the paper—meets rigorous standards. What does this mean in practice? You're not buying a pig in a poke. You know what your notebook is made of. And you can confidently reach for it every day without worrying about invisible threats.
Why is this important?
Because it's not just paper. It's a space for planning, writing, and self-discovery. It's a place where you organize your thoughts, jot down important deadlines, and sketch out the future. And the materials it's made of should be as good as your intentions. In a world where everything can be cheap, fast, and anonymous, we prioritize quality, transparency, and informed choices. This includes paper.
So before you buy your next planner or notebook, check what the certificates on its cover really mean. These aren't just technical details. They're a manifesto. They're a sign that someone has thought about you, your everyday life, and what we leave behind. And if we can do beautiful things well, that's exactly how we want to do it. From the page to the typeface.
